THE RYA NATIONAL POWERBOAT SCHEME


LEVEL 1 - INTRODUCTION TO POWERBOATING
A practical introduction to boat handling skills on small craft for the beginner. Safety, boat handling, crewing.

LEVEL 2 -- NATIONAL POWERBOAT COURSE
Be competent - Learn the essentials to be a skilled Powerboat driver
(The basis of the "International Certificate of Competence" Power up to 10 metres.)
If the course is completed on a craft over 10 metres the ICC can be obtained for larger vessels up to 24 metres & 200 tons)

INTERMEDIATE -- POWERDOAT DAY CRUISING COURSE
Going Somewhere? -- Pilotage and passage planning by day in coastal waters, using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques.

ADVANCED - POWERBOAT DAY AND NIGHT COURSE

For the adventurous cruiser - essential skills and safety considerations for skippering a boat by night in unfamiliar waters and boat handling in more demanding conditions.

RYA / MCA ADNVANCED POWERBOAT CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE

This is now gained by examination which is conducted by RYA Advanced Powerboat Examiners.
Examinations are open to anyone with the required experience.
This qualification can be used as part of a commercial certification.

SAFTEY BOAT COURSE
Boat handling and positioning skill, towing and safety considerations when acting as a safety boat, escort craft, or coach boat for racing or training activities.


ALL ARE RYA RECOGNISED COURSES run by RYA QUALIFIED INSTRUCTORS

Our Level 1 and level 2 powerboat courses are run within an operating area of no more than 3 miles from Ramsgate harbour and the river Stour from its entrance to Sandwich quay.


LEVEL 1 -- INTRODUCTION TO POWERBOATING

Provides a practical introduction to boat handling skills. Preparation launching & recovering, safety equipment, pre-start checks, personal buoyancy, boat handling techniques & manoeuvres, starting & stopping, use of kill cord, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving & coming alongside, being towed. Theory & background, IRPCS, ropework, awareness of other water users. We recommend this course be consolidated with the National Powerboat Level 2 certificate.


LEVEL 2 -- NATIONAL POWERBOAT CERTIFICATE

Provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the basis if the International Certificate of Competence. Preparation -- launching & recovering, safety equipment, lines & fenders, fuel tanks, boat handling techniques & manoeuvres, effects of current or tide, propeller controls, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving & coming alongside, high & low speed manoeuvring, man overboard. Theory & background, type of craft & engines, maintenance checks, IRPCS, weather forecasts, emergency action. This course qualifies you for the International Certificate of Competence.(Coastal sportsboat endorsement)


INTERMEDIATE POWERBOAT COURSE

Provides the skills and background knowledge needed for day cruising including: Preparation - piloting - navigation -fuel and engine checks. Boathandling and manoeuvres taking into consideration - effects of waves and rough conditions - power trim and trim tabs - berthing in different situations - use of GPS in high speed navigation and pilotage by day. --- It is highly recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF operators licence for this course.


ADVANCED POWERBOAT COURSE

Provides the skills and background knowledge needed by powerboat drivers operating in coastal waters, in more demanding conditions. Preparation, passage planning, fuel & engine checks, meteorology, boat handling techniques & manoeuvres, high speed boat handling, power trims & trim tabs, advanced manoeuvres, use of GPS & Decca, high speed navigation, manoeuvring in rough weather, pilotage by day & night, emergency situations. Assumed knowledge: Candidates should be competent to the standard of National Powerboat Certificate Level 2 (coastal) with a knowledge of navigation and chartwork to the level of Day Skipper Shorebased certificate. It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a First Aid certificate and a VHF operators certificate.

The National Powerboat Scheme is applicable to sportsboats, RIBs, dories and launches and other boats that do not normally provide accommodation or cooking facilities.

Training on boats with accommodation is covered by the RYA Motor Cruising Scheme.


This Scheme is run by the Royal Yachting Association in conjunction with the governing bodies of the other relevant sports, the British Canoe Union (BCU), British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC), British Water Skiing Federation (BWSF) and the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS).

The lower age limit for powerboat courses is 12 years. Under 16's should only use a powerboat under the supervision of an adult.
